"The Stay Out of Jail Program"

The United States has more people in prison (per capita) than any other Western industrialized nation. One out of every 20 people in the United States will serve time in prison during their lifetime. 67.5% of those will be rearrested within 3 years. (Federal Bureau of Justice statistics).

 Annual cost: $40 billion

So, what can we do?

In 1995 Jack Mitchell developed a 4-step seminar program called “Healing and Wholeness” for the inmates at the Massachusetts correctional facility where he worked as an officer. His seminars were so successful and popular that they were incorporated into the daily schedule of the institution, and became the cornerstone of Jack’s work life.

Over time it became increasingly clear that much of what he taught should be communicated to people before they ended up in jail or prison. It only made sense!

With this in mind, Jack has developed what he calls “The Stay Out of Jail Program”, with emphasis on the following:

1.       Accepting personal responsibility.

2.     Taking control of your life (including impulsive thoughts and negative emotions) through the simple practice of “mindful breathing” and “mindful living”.

3.     Experiencing the healing and transformative power of radical forgiveness.

4.     Being of service: What are you good at?

There are millions of people who are living lives of “quiet desperation”, of loneliness, of terrible brokenness. Many have given up the hope of ever living a fulfilling life.

The goal and purpose of the “The Stay Out of Jail Program” is the transformation and healing of individuals, families, and communities – one person at a time.

“In the midst of Winter,

I finally learned that there was in me

an invincible Summer.”

- Albert Camus

The need is great.

The time to act is now.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear our presence automatically liberates others.”

 Marianne Williamson (Author)
